A DET code of conduct refers to a "Department for Education and Training" code of conduct, with specific versions varying by country and educational institution but generally outlines professional standards, ethical principles and behavioural expectations for staff working with children and young people.  Key elements include maintaining professional boundaries, fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for students and colleagues, safeguarding children and acting with integrity in all professional relationships.

Core Principles of a DET Code of Conduct

Staff must behave professionally, honestly and with fair dealing in all interactions with students, parents and colleagues.

All individuals must be treated with dignity and respect without discrimination based on race, sex, religion, age, disability or other protected characteristics.

A primary responsibility is to protect the safety and welfare of children and young people which includes maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and reporting concerns.

Information about students and their families must be treated confidentially and only shared with those who have a professional need to know.

Staff must use school resources, such as equipment and premises, appropriately and only for official school-related activities.

Staff should not engage in online behaviour that would be unacceptable in the workplace or could damage the reputation of the profession.

Why a Code of Conduct is Important

It helps to create a secure and positive environment for children and young people to learn and develop.

It sets clear expectations for staff behaviour, ensuring high standards of professionalism within the education sector.

It helps to maintain public trust and confidence in teachers and educational institutions.

It offers direction and guidance for staff when faced with uncertain or challenging situations, helping them to act appropriately.
